Every sheet carries its label

The field names are printed and the values are typed at mounting, the way a herbarium label has always been made. What the catalogue knows, the sheet says.

Accession

Issued the day a plant comes in from the field, and never reused, even if the sheet is lost.

Determined

Who named it, and when. A new name is added below the old one; nothing is written over.

Locality

As the collector wrote it in the field book, then a height and a grid reference.

Plate

Set only when the sheet has been painted for the season's print.

The orchid stays twelve days: its tubers hold water, so it sits under two extra blotters and the board is weighted with the old Flora.

The season's plate, painted from the sheet
