Reel 4, bamboo grove

The bamboo grove is painted back in竹林

Reel 4 came back from the scanner washed flat. Each leaf is repainted from the master, with the edge bleed and the paper fibre left in.

How the seal gets pressed

One wash, one seal, one restorer's initials.

Every correction on Frame 212 is logged the way the painting itself would show it: a wash that has either taken or hasn't. Three marks are open on this frame. Two are kept. One is still low.

Material, chosen per object

Nothing on the table shares a surface with anything else.

The stone is dry stone. The pond is wet ink. The paper is soaked paper. Each keeps its own material instead of one texture sprayed over the whole desk.

The Duan inkstone

A flat, dry, matte grinding face, its thickness visible on the front wall. Wet ink lives only in the small carved pond at the top end, glossy and black, with a stone eye along its lit side.

The ink stick

Pressed pine soot, unmarked, laid against the stone's left edge. It never touches the paper; it only ever meets the pond.

The goat-hair brush

White goat hair, tip soaked black, resting across the stone until a correction is called for. Depth is a verb here: tight in the pond, grown and soft mid-flight.

"The far stem gets its second wash the same way it got its first: one segment, one pause, one node at a time."
— the restoration room's own note on Frame 212

Reel 4 is one wash from wet.
