density

Low-to-medium density with deliberate ma; long text breathes in 58-68 character measures while dashboard cards use compact rows inside framed cells.

hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from measure, scale, and rule weight: serif headings, generous leading, amber state marks, and small mono metadata rather than saturated color blocks.

Mobile below 640px stacks rail, article, and cards; tablet 640-1024px keeps nav compact and places insight cards beneath the reading pane; desktop above 1180px uses three partitions.
grid

Desktop uses a 12-column lattice with 96px rhythm: 220px nav, minmax(560px, 1fr) editorial pane, and 340px insight column.

whitespace

Whitespace is treated as ma: broad top/bottom padding, quiet gutters of 24-48px, and intentionally empty paper fields around dense synthesis blocks.

guidance
do
  • Use luminous warm off-whites and beige neutrals as material, not blank default white.
  • Align dividers across components so the interface feels built from one shoji partition system.
  • Keep long-form text readable with narrow measure, high line-height, and clear serif hierarchy.
  • Use amber only for selected, active, focus, or progress state; let structure carry the rest.
  • Add subtle fiber texture and soft translucency where it does not reduce text contrast.
avoid
  • Do not use glossy glass cards, large blur halos, neon gradients, or saturated decorative accent fields.
  • Do not mix many radius sizes; the geometry must remain square paper-in-frame.
  • Do not create generic equal-card dashboards without a reading or synthesis context.
  • Do not let texture lower contrast on paragraphs or data tables.
  • Do not use Japanese motifs as illustration clichés; translate shoji and washi into layout, material, and dividers.

# Shoji Washi Luminous Editorial Interface

## Philosophy

A quiet knowledge-work interface built from shoji partitions, washi translucency, and editorial reading discipline: long text sits in luminous paper fields while fine wooden-grid dividers create calm structure without SaaS gloss.

### Values

- diffuse luminosity over brightness
- typographic measure before decoration
- ma: meaningful intervals of empty paper
- visible modular partitions
- handmade imperfection controlled by system logic

### Anti-Values

- generic white dashboard cards with arbitrary shadows
- neon or decorative accent color as identity
- heavy glassmorphism blur that obscures text
- over-rounded plush SaaS geometry

### Visual Character

- Use layered off-white CSS gradients plus a low-opacity fiber noise overlay on body and panels to make surfaces read as translucent washi paper.
- Build the screen on a shoji lattice: 1px warm gray vertical and horizontal divider lines align navigation, reading columns, cards, and table rows.
- Prefer square and two-pixel radii with inset hairline borders, so panels feel like paper stretched inside wood frames rather than floating bubbles.
- Set long-form text in a narrow editorial measure with generous line-height and large calm headings; dashboard data remains secondary and caption-like.
- Reserve one restrained bamboo-amber semantic accent for selected state, progress, and focus rings while errors and success use muted natural pigments only.

## Components

### Composition

Compose screens as modular partitions: a fixed shoji rail navigation, a wide editorial reading pane, and a slim synthesis/card column separated by continuous hairline dividers.

### Density

Low-to-medium density with deliberate ma; long text breathes in 58-68 character measures while dashboard cards use compact rows inside framed cells.

### Hierarchy

Hierarchy comes from measure, scale, and rule weight: serif headings, generous leading, amber state marks, and small mono metadata rather than saturated color blocks.

### Signature Patterns

- Shoji-lattice backgrounds made with repeating-linear-gradient hairlines that align to panel edges and continue across navigation, article, and cards.
- Washi surface stack: semi-transparent off-white panels, low-opacity radial light blooms, and pseudo-element fiber speckles clipped inside each major cell.
- Editorial marginalia rail with tiny mono labels, reading progress ticks, and amber vertical state rules instead of badges as primary hierarchy.
- Paper slip controls: rectangular inputs and buttons with inset borders, square radii, quiet hover darkening, and focus shown as a two-pixel amber outline.

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ed834-06ea-7810-ac5d-cc47f8cddf06/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do Use luminous warm off-whites and beige neutrals as material, not blank default white.
- Do Align dividers across components so the interface feels built from one shoji partition system.
- Do Keep long-form text readable with narrow measure, high line-height, and clear serif hierarchy.
- Do Use amber only for selected, active, focus, or progress state; let structure carry the rest.
- Do Add subtle fiber texture and soft translucency where it does not reduce text contrast.
- Don't Do not use glossy glass cards, large blur halos, neon gradients, or saturated decorative accent fields.
- Don't Do not mix many radius sizes; the geometry must remain square paper-in-frame.
- Don't Do not create generic equal-card dashboards without a reading or synthesis context.
- Don't Do not let texture lower contrast on paragraphs or data tables.
- Don't Do not use Japanese motifs as illustration clichés; translate shoji and washi into layout, material, and dividers.

### Accessibility

Maintain AA contrast for all text, keep semantic state colors paired with labels or rules, provide visible amber focus outlines, and avoid relying on translucency behind small text.

### Usage Context

Best for research editors, knowledge synthesis tools, archives, long-form AI reading, calm analytics, and dashboards that need quiet trust rather than urgency.

# Shoji Washi Luminous Editorial Interface shadcn/ui Components

Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019ed834-06ea-7810-ac5d-cc47f8cddf06`
Slug: `shoji-washi-luminous-editorial-interface`

## Intent

A quiet knowledge-work interface built from shoji partitions, washi translucency, and editorial reading discipline: long text sits in luminous paper fields while fine wooden-grid dividers create calm structure without SaaS gloss.

## Required primitives

- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Token cues

  "success": "#6F7D5C",
  "surface": "#FFFDF7",
  "text": "#302D27",
  "warning": "#B68A4A"
}

Typography:

{

}

## Visual character to preserve

## ShadSync visual profile

{
  "family": "paper-collage",
  "material": "paper",
  "contour": "default",
  "border": "solid",
  "underlay": true,
  "grain": true,
  "stickerBadges": true,
  "motion": "still",
  "density": "balanced",
  "accents": [
    "primary",
    "accent",
    "secondary",
    "muted"
  ]
}

## Signature component recipes

### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/shoji-washi-luminous-editorial-interface/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use luminous warm off-whites and beige neutrals as material, not blank default white.; Align dividers across components so the interface feels built from one shoji partition system.; Keep long-form text readable with narrow measure, high line-height, and clear serif hierarchy.; Use amber only for selected, active, focus, or progress state; let structure carry the rest.; Add subtle fiber texture and soft translucency where it does not reduce text contrast.
- Do not: Do not use glossy glass cards, large blur halos, neon gradients, or saturated decorative accent fields.; Do not mix many radius sizes; the geometry must remain square paper-in-frame.; Do not create generic equal-card dashboards without a reading or synthesis context.; Do not let texture lower contrast on paragraphs or data tables.; Do not use Japanese motifs as illustration clichés; translate shoji and washi into layout, material, and dividers.

## Copy-paste component example

This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
