composition
Build every screen from joined rectangular rails: one dominant work panel, one narrow status column, and at least one purposeful empty interval that remains empty.
density

Moderate working density with 24px module padding, 32-48px section intervals, and compact data rows only inside framed operational panels.

hierarchy

Use typographic weight, rail thickness, and indigo active fills for hierarchy; avoid drop-shadow elevation as the primary ordering device.

signature patterns
Notched-card corners made with linear-gradient masks that create katagami-like negative cutouts on product panels.Joinery rails: 3px charcoal or indigo structural strips attached to only one side of a panel to indicate priority or active state.Ma gutters: intentionally blank grid cells outlined by faint registration ticks rather than filled with decorative content.Cutout hover states where buttons and table rows invert to indigo blue-black while retaining a thin off-white inset line.Washi-fiber surface overlay using tiny low-contrast radial and linear gradients constrained to backgrounds and large panels.
layout
breakpoints

mobile 375px single-column stacked rails; tablet 768px two-column work/context; desktop 1200px+ full 12-column joinery grid

grid

Asymmetric 12-column joinery grid with 24px gutters, 64px left rail on desktop, and a dominant 7-column work panel beside a 3-column context panel.

whitespace

Whitespace is treated as ma: keep large empty intervals around key decisions, never fill blank cells unless they improve task comprehension.

guidance
do
  • Use square panels, exposed dividers, and rail weights to show product structure.
  • Keep craft references abstract: cutouts, fiber, indigo, joinery, interval, not icons of fans or waves.
  • Make active controls blue-black with clear AA contrast and visible keyboard focus.
  • Allow asymmetry: one dominant panel and one quiet support column feels more authored than equal cards.
avoid
  • Do not use decorative kimono, wave, sakura, or lantern motifs.
  • Do not add soft glassmorphism, large radii, colorful status confetti, or generic gradients.
  • Do not let texture reduce readability; fibers must remain below content contrast.
  • Do not center every section or fill ma whitespace with filler widgets.

# Katagami Joinery Interface Structure

## Philosophy

A clean web-app language for AYA that translates Japanese craft into structure rather than ornament: katagami cutout logic becomes panels and hit states, joinery becomes the grid, washi becomes quiet surface tactility, and indigo-sumi restraint gives active states depth without decorative nostalgia.

### Values

- craft as interface grammar
- disciplined negative space and ma
- structural asymmetry
- material restraint
- precise product utility

### Anti-Values

- decorative Japanese motifs applied as wallpaper
- generic SaaS cards with craft labels
- busy repeat patterns that compete with content
- soft arbitrary radii or glow-heavy AI polish

### Visual Character

- Square off-white panels use 1px charcoal borders plus occasional 3px left or top joinery rails to make hierarchy visible in CSS.
- Katagami cutout logic appears as clipped corner notches, inset label apertures, and negative-space slots rather than illustrated patterns.
- Layouts use an asymmetric 12-column joinery grid with deliberate empty cells and wide ma gutters between functional clusters.
- Active and hover states fill with blue-black indigo while retaining thin sumi outlines and underlined text instead of shadows.
- Washi tactility is expressed through low-opacity fibrous background gradients and subtle grain overlays on surfaces only.

# Katagami Joinery Interface Structure

## Overview

A clean web-app language for AYA that translates Japanese craft into structure rather than ornament: katagami cutout logic becomes panels and hit states, joinery becomes the grid, washi becomes quiet surface tactility, and indigo-sumi restraint gives active states depth without decorative nostalgia.

### Values

- craft as interface grammar
- disciplined negative space and ma
- structural asymmetry
- material restraint
- precise product utility

### Anti-Values

- decorative Japanese motifs applied as wallpaper
- generic SaaS cards with craft labels
- busy repeat patterns that compete with content
- soft arbitrary radii or glow-heavy AI polish

### Visual Character

- Square off-white panels use 1px charcoal borders plus occasional 3px left or top joinery rails to make hierarchy visible in CSS.
- Katagami cutout logic appears as clipped corner notches, inset label apertures, and negative-space slots rather than illustrated patterns.
- Layouts use an asymmetric 12-column joinery grid with deliberate empty cells and wide ma gutters between functional clusters.
- Active and hover states fill with blue-black indigo while retaining thin sumi outlines and underlined text instead of shadows.
- Washi tactility is expressed through low-opacity fibrous background gradients and subtle grain overlays on surfaces only.

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edc13-e249-7732-a4cf-117da32c802f/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do Use square panels, exposed dividers, and rail weights to show product structure.
- Do Keep craft references abstract: cutouts, fiber, indigo, joinery, interval, not icons of fans or waves.
- Do Make active controls blue-black with clear AA contrast and visible keyboard focus.
- Do Allow asymmetry: one dominant panel and one quiet support column feels more authored than equal cards.
- Don't Do not use decorative kimono, wave, sakura, or lantern motifs.
- Don't Do not add soft glassmorphism, large radii, colorful status confetti, or generic gradients.
- Don't Do not let texture reduce readability; fibers must remain below content contrast.
- Don't Do not center every section or fill ma whitespace with filler widgets.

### Accessibility

Maintain WCAG AA contrast, preserve visible focus outlines with 2px indigo/cream double states, and never encode status by color alone.

# Katagami Joinery Interface Structure shadcn/ui Components

Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019edc13-e249-7732-a4cf-117da32c802f`
Slug: `katagami-joinery-interface-structure`

## Intent

A clean web-app language for AYA that translates Japanese craft into structure rather than ornament: katagami cutout logic becomes panels and hit states, joinery becomes the grid, washi becomes quiet surface tactility, and indigo-sumi restraint gives active states depth without decorative nostalgia.

## Required primitives

- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve

## ShadSync visual profile

{
  "family": "paper-collage",
  "material": "paper",
  "contour": "default",
  "border": "solid",
  "underlay": false,
  "grain": true,
  "stickerBadges": false,

  "density": "balanced",
  "accents": [
    "primary",
    "accent",
    "secondary",
    "muted"
  ]
}

## Signature component recipes

### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/katagami-joinery-interface-structure/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use square panels, exposed dividers, and rail weights to show product structure.; Keep craft references abstract: cutouts, fiber, indigo, joinery, interval, not icons of fans or waves.; Make active controls blue-black with clear AA contrast and visible keyboard focus.; Allow asymmetry: one dominant panel and one quiet support column feels more authored than equal cards.
- Do not: Do not use decorative kimono, wave, sakura, or lantern motifs.; Do not add soft glassmorphism, large radii, colorful status confetti, or generic gradients.; Do not let texture reduce readability; fibers must remain below content contrast.; Do not center every section or fill ma whitespace with filler widgets.
