rules
Compose screens as a reading instrument: a narrow command rail, a generous text measure around 62-74 characters, and a persistent sidenote plane for context that supports without interrupting the main path.
Maintain compact vertical rhythm on an 8px baseline, with body rows at 28px line boxes, labels at 16px, and only deliberate pauses between sections.
Use font role, position, rule weight, and tone before size. Headings are serif and sparse; body text is highly legible sans; metadata is mono, small, aligned, and consistently placed.
layout
>=1180px persistent sidenote column; 768-1179px two-column rail plus stacked notes; <768px rail becomes top strip and sidenotes fold under their anchors.
Desktop uses grid-template-columns: 64px minmax(560px, 1fr) 272px with a max reading measure inside the main column.
Whitespace is narrow but regular: 8px baseline inside dense records, 24px section gaps, and 32px outer paper margins to keep long text calm.
guidance
- Anchor annotations to paragraphs, rows, or controls with stable note numbers and a visible rule.
- Keep metadata low contrast and spatially consistent, using mono labels and fixed-width key columns.
- Use paper-toned surfaces, square geometry, and single-pixel rules to separate dense information.
- Preserve readable line length and generous line height even when the interface contains many contextual layers.
- Do not turn metadata into saturated chip confetti or scatter it inline through body copy.
- Do not use large shadows, glossy cards, or pill-heavy SaaS conventions to create hierarchy.
- Do not make the sidenote column compete with the primary reading path through large type or high contrast.
- Do not rely on novelty display lettering; the language should survive routine product screens.

# Margin Note Ledger ## Philosophy Margin Note Ledger is a quiet product language for dense contextual reading: the main column stays calm and continuous while metadata, annotations, and nested context live in measured marginal layers like notes on a paper dossier. ### Values - reading-first information density - stable marginal context - paper-like restraint - role-based hierarchy over display styling - durable controls for long sessions ### Anti-Values - expressive hero typography that interrupts scanning - floating metadata chips scattered through the text - decorative color systems without structural purpose - large rounded SaaS cards that waste vertical rhythm ### Visual Character - A three-column CSS grid uses a 64px navigation rail, minmax main reading column, and 272px sidenote column with the note column collapsing below the text on narrow screens. - Paper surfaces use flat warm off-white backgrounds with subtle repeating linear-gradient fibre and single-pixel moss rule lines instead of shadows or glossy panels. - Metadata is rendered as compact uppercase labels in a mono face at 11px, placed in fixed row gutters and low-contrast side cells rather than inline badges. - Annotations use desaturated indigo left rules, small bracket markers, and hanging note numbers that align to the same 8px vertical baseline as body copy. - Nested contextual layers are expressed through inset rule boxes and stepped padding, never through extra card shadows, so depth remains readable but light. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 3px - **Character**: soft moss rules for structure and indigo accent rules only for active annotations - **Default Width**: 1px - **Style**: solid ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | accent | `#6D6FA3` | | background | `#F4F0E7` | | border | `#D8D1C2` | | error | `#9A4B42` | | info | `#536B8F` | | muted | `#777B70` | | primary | `#334E68` | | secondary | `#6F7B62` | | success | `#5B7352` | | surface | `#FBF8F0` | | text | `#222724` | | warning | `#A06F32` | ### Motion - **Duration**: 140ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0.1, 1) - **Philosophy**: small rule-color and background-paper shifts; no bouncing, scaling, or dramatic transitions ### Radii - **Full**: 9999px - **Lg**: 6px - **Md**: 4px - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 2px ### Shadows - **Lg**: 0 1px 0 rgba(34,39,36,0.08) - **Md**: 0 1px 0 rgba(34,39,36,0.06) - **Sm**: none ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64] ### Surfaces - **Bg Pattern**: subtle horizontal and vertical paper fibre gradients - **Card Style**: square paper blocks separated by 1px rules and inset annotation gutters - **Treatment**: warm paper fields with no elevation and faint fibre lines ### Typography - **Base Size**: 16px - **Body Font**: Noto Sans JP - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500;600&family=Noto+Sans+JP:wght@400;500;600;700&family=Shippori+Mincho:wght@500;600;700&display=swap - **Heading Font**: Shippori Mincho - **Letter Spacing**: -0.01em - **Line Height**: 1.68 - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Scale Ratio**: 1.18 ## Rules ### Composition Compose screens as a reading instrument: a narrow command rail, a generous text measure around 62-74 characters, and a persistent sidenote plane for context that supports without interrupting the main path. ### Density Maintain compact vertical rhythm on an 8px baseline, with body rows at 28px line boxes, labels at 16px, and only deliberate pauses between sections. ### Hierarchy Use font role, position, rule weight, and tone before size. # Margin Note Ledger
## Overview
Margin Note Ledger is a quiet product language for dense contextual reading: the main column stays calm and continuous while metadata, annotations, and nested context live in measured marginal layers like notes on a paper dossier.
### Values
- reading-first information density
- stable marginal context
- paper-like restraint
- role-based hierarchy over display styling
- durable controls for long sessions
### Anti-Values
- expressive hero typography that interrupts scanning
- floating metadata chips scattered through the text
- decorative color systems without structural purpose
- large rounded SaaS cards that waste vertical rhythm
### Visual Character
- A three-column CSS grid uses a 64px navigation rail, minmax main reading column, and 272px sidenote column with the note column collapsing below the text on narrow screens.
## Colors

## Components
### Composition
Compose screens as a reading instrument: a narrow command rail, a generous text measure around 62-74 characters, and a persistent sidenote plane for context that supports without interrupting the main path.
### Density
Maintain compact vertical rhythm on an 8px baseline, with body rows at 28px line boxes, labels at 16px, and only deliberate pauses between sections.
### Hierarchy
Use font role, position, rule weight, and tone before size. Headings are serif and sparse; body text is highly legible sans; metadata is mono, small, aligned, and consistently placed.
### Signature Patterns
- Marginal note panels align to paragraph anchors and use indigo rule-left borders plus hanging numeric markers to make context findable without becoming badges.
- Metadata ledger rows use fixed-width mono keys and quiet moss separators, appearing in side gutters or table leading columns rather than as colorful chips.
- Nested context is shown through stepped inset rule boxes with increasingly warm paper backgrounds, preserving a light page texture while revealing hierarchy.
- Quiet emphasis uses weight 600, slight background wash, and bracket glyphs instead of saturated fills, large icons, or animated attention effects.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edc1a-a3f6-7e23-958e-da2e0e630f49/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Anchor annotations to paragraphs, rows, or controls with stable note numbers and a visible rule.
- Do Keep metadata low contrast and spatially consistent, using mono labels and fixed-width key columns.
- Do Use paper-toned surfaces, square geometry, and single-pixel rules to separate dense information.
- Do Preserve readable line length and generous line height even when the interface contains many contextual layers.
- Don't Do not turn metadata into saturated chip confetti or scatter it inline through body copy.
- Don't Do not use large shadows, glossy cards, or pill-heavy SaaS conventions to create hierarchy.
- Don't Do not make the sidenote column compete with the primary reading path through large type or high contrast.
- Don't Do not rely on novelty display lettering; the language should survive routine product screens.

# Margin Note Ledger shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019edc1a-a3f6-7e23-958e-da2e0e630f49`
Slug: `margin-note-ledger-aya`
## Intent
Margin Note Ledger is a quiet product language for dense contextual reading: the main column stays calm and continuous while metadata, annotations, and nested context live in measured marginal layers like notes on a paper dossier.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
- A three-column CSS grid uses a 64px navigation rail, minmax main reading column, and 272px sidenote column with the note column collapsing below the text on narrow screens.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/margin-note-ledger-aya/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Anchor annotations to paragraphs, rows, or controls with stable note numbers and a visible rule.; Keep metadata low contrast and spatially consistent, using mono labels and fixed-width key columns.; Use paper-toned surfaces, square geometry, and single-pixel rules to separate dense information.; Preserve readable line length and generous line height even when the interface contains many contextual layers.
- Do not: Do not turn metadata into saturated chip confetti or scatter it inline through body copy.; Do not use large shadows, glossy cards, or pill-heavy SaaS conventions to create hierarchy.; Do not make the sidenote column compete with the primary reading path through large type or high contrast.; Do not rely on novelty display lettering; the language should survive routine product screens.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
