rules
composition
Compose screens as woven context: a calm central reading sheet crossed by narrow source, status, and annotation strands. Use column rails, row rules, and staggered metadata rather than freestanding decorative cards.
density
Elegant density is welcome when rows align to a common 8px rhythm, labels remain short, metadata is parked in slim lanes, and paragraphs keep readable line-height.
hierarchy
Reserve large type for the current object title; use small caps, mono timestamps, weight shifts, and indigo rules for state. Avoid colored fills except for one active accent mark or selected thread.
signature patterns
Thread rails: persistent 1px vertical separators in gutters and sidebars create woven strands of source, decision, and note context.Stencil apertures: small clipped labels and ruled header slots reveal status through negative space instead of badges filled with color.Offset paper layers: panels start on different grid columns with tiny top offsets and shared baselines, making context feel layered without shadows.Indigo orientation stitch: a single 2px accent rule marks active tab, selected row, focus ring, or current reading line.Ruled reading groups: long text is organized by hairline horizontal separators, compact mono metadata, and generous internal leading instead of boxed cards.
layout
breakpoints
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px, wide 1440px
grid
Twelve-column desktop grid with two slim margin rails, central 6-column reading measure, and 3-column context stack; tablet collapses to one rail plus content; mobile becomes a single ruled paper stack.
whitespace
Whitespace is treated as ma: large outer paper margins, quiet empty columns near active text, and compact inner gaps that keep dense context readable without looking sparse.
guidance
- Use warm paper neutrals, ink-gray text, and one restrained indigo or persimmon accent for active orientation only.
- Make density legible through aligned baselines, hairline separators, small metadata lanes, and serif body text for longer passages.
- Use stencil restraint: cutout-like labels, ruled slots, clipped corners, and negative space rather than literal patterns or illustrations.
- Keep components square, flat, and paper-like; let borders and typography carry most hierarchy.
- Do not add textile illustrations, Japanese icons, washi noise, floral motifs, or repeating decorative waves.
- Do not use generic rounded SaaS cards, large tinted shadows, gradient hero sections, or colorful status chips.
- Do not let side context compete with reading; secondary strands must be smaller, quieter, and aligned.
- Do not introduce more than one accent hue per screen or use accent as broad background fill.

# Woven Margin Context
## Overview
A clean, light design language for AYA that treats dense product context like woven paper: many parallel threads of notes, sources, states, and decisions are held in calm vertical rhythm, with katagami-like restraint, generous ma, and only one precise accent for orientation.
### Values
- Quiet comprehension before decoration
- Layered context without visual noise
- Precise editorial density for long reading sessions
- Japanese ma expressed as measured intervals and deliberate empty margins
- Stencil-like restraint where repeated cut lines organize information rather than illustrate motifs
### Anti-Values
- Literal textile patterns, faux washi textures, cherry blossoms, waves, or ornamental Japanese motifs
- Generic SaaS card grids with heavy radius, tinted shadows, and loud dashboard metrics
- Over-colored status systems that compete with reading and annotation
- Dense tables without breathing columns, alignment discipline, or clear active state
### Visual Character
- A 12-column shell with two persistent margin rails uses hairline border-left and border-right rules so context reads as interlaced vertical strands rather than isolated cards.
- All panels are square or 2px radius paper sheets with transparent backgrounds, one-pixel ink-gray separators, and no drop shadows beyond a faint inner paper edge.
- Text hierarchy relies on weight, tracking, line-height, and tabular numerals; the palette stays warm white, pale paper, ink gray, and one restrained indigo accent.
- Layering is created with offset column starts, ruled row groups, and clipped label slivers that feel like stencil apertures without adding decorative imagery.
- Whitespace is asymmetric: wide quiet margins around dense readable bodies, with compact metadata lanes and generous line spacing preserving ma inside text-heavy surfaces.

## Components
### Composition
Compose screens as woven context: a calm central reading sheet crossed by narrow source, status, and annotation strands. Use column rails, row rules, and staggered metadata rather than freestanding decorative cards.
### Density
Elegant density is welcome when rows align to a common 8px rhythm, labels remain short, metadata is parked in slim lanes, and paragraphs keep readable line-height.

- Ruled reading groups: long text is organized by hairline horizontal separators, compact mono metadata, and generous internal leading instead of boxed cards.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edc1c-2ef1-7d30-8bbc-31aed011c75c/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use warm paper neutrals, ink-gray text, and one restrained indigo or persimmon accent for active orientation only.
- Do Make density legible through aligned baselines, hairline separators, small metadata lanes, and serif body text for longer passages.
- Do Use stencil restraint: cutout-like labels, ruled slots, clipped corners, and negative space rather than literal patterns or illustrations.
- Do Keep components square, flat, and paper-like; let borders and typography carry most hierarchy.
- Don't Do not add textile illustrations, Japanese icons, washi noise, floral motifs, or repeating decorative waves.
- Don't Do not use generic rounded SaaS cards, large tinted shadows, gradient hero sections, or colorful status chips.
- Don't Do not let side context compete with reading; secondary strands must be smaller, quieter, and aligned.
- Don't Do not introduce more than one accent hue per screen or use accent as broad background fill.
### Usage Context
Best for AYA-style research workspaces, long-form AI context surfaces, source synthesis tools, editorial SaaS, note review, policy analysis, and any product that must weave many evidence strands into calm reading.

# Woven Margin Context shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019edc1c-2ef1-7d30-8bbc-31aed011c75c`
Slug: `woven-margin-context`
## Intent
A clean, light design language for AYA that treats dense product context like woven paper: many parallel threads of notes, sources, states, and decisions are held in calm vertical rhythm, with katagami-like restraint, generous ma, and only one precise accent for orientation.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/woven-margin-context/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use warm paper neutrals, ink-gray text, and one restrained indigo or persimmon accent for active orientation only.; Make density legible through aligned baselines, hairline separators, small metadata lanes, and serif body text for longer passages.; Use stencil restraint: cutout-like labels, ruled slots, clipped corners, and negative space rather than literal patterns or illustrations.; Keep components square, flat, and paper-like; let borders and typography carry most hierarchy.
- Do not: Do not add textile illustrations, Japanese icons, washi noise, floral motifs, or repeating decorative waves.; Do not use generic rounded SaaS cards, large tinted shadows, gradient hero sections, or colorful status chips.; Do not let side context compete with reading; secondary strands must be smaller, quieter, and aligned.; Do not introduce more than one accent hue per screen or use accent as broad background fill.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
