rules
Build screens as joinery assemblies: one dominant work surface, one narrow utility rail, and offset secondary panels separated by charcoal dividers and generous ma.
Medium-low density with strong intervals; data rows may be compact but must be grouped by dividers and breathing margins rather than card stacks.
Use IBM Plex Serif for quiet section authority, Noto Sans JP for product text, and IBM Plex Mono for coordinates, timestamps, and craft-process codes.
layout
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px and above
8px base grid with 12-column desktop joinery frame, tablet two-column frame, and mobile stacked panels with persistent section rails.
Whitespace is treated as ma: large quiet gutters around decision areas, tighter intervals inside rows, and deliberate asymmetry between left and right margins.
guidance
- Use charcoal dividers, warm off-white panels, and blue-black active states as the only dominant visual system.
- Translate craft references into structure: cutouts, fitted panel seams, woven row rhythm, fiber texture, and measured intervals.
- Keep iconography thin, geometric, and functional: crop marks, pins, rails, knots, and simple rectangular path symbols.
- Make hover and focus states legible through ink-wash backgrounds, 2px rails, and visible offset focus outlines.
- Preserve AA contrast and keep texture low enough that text remains crisp.
- Do not place decorative Japanese patterns behind content or use literal craft motifs as wallpaper.
- Do not mix arbitrary rounded cards, glass shadows, neon blues, or generic SaaS gradients.
- Do not make every module symmetrical; preserve one measured offset or quiet blank interval in each major view.
- Do not use soft plush radii, emoji icons, brush-script typography, or tourist-shop symbols.
- Do not let texture compete with data, forms, or navigation.

# Katagami Joinery Interface Structure ## Philosophy A restrained product language that converts katagami stencil cuts, Japanese joinery frames, washi fiber softness, and aizome blue-black depth into interface structure rather than ornament. It is built for AYA as a calm work surface where negative space, asymmetric intervals, and fine charcoal rules organize decisions with tactile precision. ### Values - structure before decoration - disciplined ma and negative space - craft abstraction over literal motifs - tactile natural materials rendered as quiet surface behavior - asymmetry that still feels measured and product-safe ### Anti-Values - decorative Japanese pattern wallpaper - generic white SaaS cards with arbitrary roundedness - bright saturated status-color spectacle - literal fans, waves, blossoms, or faux-calligraphy icons ### Visual Character - Use 1px charcoal grid lines and 2px blue-black active rails to form joinery-like panel frames without heavy shadows. - Create stencil logic with small rectangular cutout notches, inset label slots, and positive-negative gaps at card corners. - Render washi tactility through warm off-white panels with low-opacity fiber gradients and almost flat surface shadows. - Compose screens on an asymmetric modular grid where one wide work panel is offset by narrow utility strips and quiet margins. - Keep controls squared with minimal radius, fine dividers, and hover states that fill as blue-black ink washes rather than glowing. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 2px - **Character**: charcoal structural dividers with blue-black active rails and occasional open stencil gaps - **Default Width**: 1px - **Style**: solid ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | accent | `#172B44` | | background | `#F4F0E7` | | border | `#2A3032` | | error | `#8E3D32` | | info | `#315A73` | | muted | `#6F746F` | | primary | `#111A23` | | secondary | `#3D454A` | | success | `#4C6A4F` | | surface | `#FBF8F0` | | text | `#172026` | | warning | `#A8792C` | ### Motion - **Duration**: 140ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0.1, 1) - **Philosophy**: motion behaves like an ink wash settling: short opacity fills and 1px translations, never bounce or float ### Radii - **Full**: 9999px - **Lg**: 4px - **Md**: 3px - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 2px ### Shadows - **Lg**: 0 12px 28px rgba(17,26,35,0.10) - **Md**: 0 2px 8px rgba(17,26,35,0.07) - **Sm**: 0 1px 0 rgba(17,26,35,0.08) ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64] ### Surfaces - **Bg Pattern**: very faint vertical fiber and sparse 1px joinery guide lines aligned to the 8px scale - **Card Style**: flat framed panels using charcoal linework, small notch cutouts, and inset header strips - **Treatment**: warm washi off-white with subtle fiber speckle and no glossy gradients ### Typography - **Base Size**: 16px - **Body Font**: Noto Sans JP - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500;600&family=IBM+Plex+Serif:wght@500;600&family=Noto+Sans+JP:wght@400;500;700&display=swap - **Heading Font**: IBM Plex Serif - **Letter Spacing**: -0.015em - **Line Height**: 1.56 - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Scale Ratio**: 1.22 ## Rules ### Composition Build screens as joinery assemblies: one dominant work surface, one narrow utility rail, and offset secondary panels separated by charcoal dividers and generous ma. ### Density Medium-low density with strong intervals; # Katagami Joinery Interface Structure
## Overview
A restrained product language that converts katagami stencil cuts, Japanese joinery frames, washi fiber softness, and aizome blue-black depth into interface structure rather than ornament. It is built for AYA as a calm work surface where negative space, asymmetric intervals, and fine charcoal rules organize decisions with tactile precision.
### Values
- structure before decoration
- disciplined ma and negative space
- craft abstraction over literal motifs
- tactile natural materials rendered as quiet surface behavior
- asymmetry that still feels measured and product-safe
### Anti-Values
- decorative Japanese pattern wallpaper
- generic white SaaS cards with arbitrary roundedness
- bright saturated status-color spectacle
- literal fans, waves, blossoms, or faux-calligraphy icons
### Visual Character
- Use 1px charcoal grid lines and 2px blue-black active rails to form joinery-like panel frames without heavy shadows.
## Colors

## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edc2e-bbfb-7523-8169-54fd1ca17847/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use charcoal dividers, warm off-white panels, and blue-black active states as the only dominant visual system.
- Do Translate craft references into structure: cutouts, fitted panel seams, woven row rhythm, fiber texture, and measured intervals.
- Do Keep iconography thin, geometric, and functional: crop marks, pins, rails, knots, and simple rectangular path symbols.
- Do Make hover and focus states legible through ink-wash backgrounds, 2px rails, and visible offset focus outlines.
- Do Preserve AA contrast and keep texture low enough that text remains crisp.
- Don't Do not place decorative Japanese patterns behind content or use literal craft motifs as wallpaper.
- Don't Do not mix arbitrary rounded cards, glass shadows, neon blues, or generic SaaS gradients.
- Don't Do not make every module symmetrical; preserve one measured offset or quiet blank interval in each major view.
- Don't Do not use soft plush radii, emoji icons, brush-script typography, or tourist-shop symbols.
- Don't Do not let texture compete with data, forms, or navigation.
### Accessibility
Maintain strong contrast against warm surfaces, use focus outlines that combine charcoal and blue-black, keep hit targets at least 40px, and never rely on color alone for state.
### Usage Context
Best for AYA-style planning, archive, writing, craft operations, research synthesis, and calm productivity tools that need tactile minimalism without decoration.

# Katagami Joinery Interface Structure shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019edc2e-bbfb-7523-8169-54fd1ca17847`
Slug: `katagami-joinery-interface-structure`
## Intent
A restrained product language that converts katagami stencil cuts, Japanese joinery frames, washi fiber softness, and aizome blue-black depth into interface structure rather than ornament. It is built for AYA as a calm work surface where negative space, asymmetric intervals, and fine charcoal rules organize decisions with tactile precision.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
- Use 1px charcoal grid lines and 2px blue-black active rails to form joinery-like panel frames without heavy shadows.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/katagami-joinery-interface-structure/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use charcoal dividers, warm off-white panels, and blue-black active states as the only dominant visual system.; Translate craft references into structure: cutouts, fitted panel seams, woven row rhythm, fiber texture, and measured intervals.; Keep iconography thin, geometric, and functional: crop marks, pins, rails, knots, and simple rectangular path symbols.; Make hover and focus states legible through ink-wash backgrounds, 2px rails, and visible offset focus outlines.; Preserve AA contrast and keep texture low enough that text remains crisp.
- Do not: Do not place decorative Japanese patterns behind content or use literal craft motifs as wallpaper.; Do not mix arbitrary rounded cards, glass shadows, neon blues, or generic SaaS gradients.; Do not make every module symmetrical; preserve one measured offset or quiet blank interval in each major view.; Do not use soft plush radii, emoji icons, brush-script typography, or tourist-shop symbols.; Do not let texture compete with data, forms, or navigation.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
