composition

Use an asymmetric workspace shell: narrow woven navigation rail, broad text ledger, and a right detail paper panel aligned to a strict 8px baseline grid.

density

Calm but productive: compact tables and notes are allowed when line height stays generous, separators remain pale, and every cluster has a clear label.

hierarchy

Let type size, weight, rule spacing, and selected-row tint establish hierarchy; accents are small confirmations rather than broad color blocks.

signature patterns
Layer repeating-linear-gradient weave on body and cards with opacity below 0.05 so the texture reads as paper fiber rather than decoration.Add stencil corner ticks using ::before and ::after pseudo-elements on cards, dialogs, and selected rows as tiny cut-paper registration marks.Use dashed katagami dividers made from repeating-linear-gradient backgrounds instead of heavy horizontal rules between dense text groups.Represent selection with a pale indigo left rule plus a paper-toned row wash, reserving muted persimmon for warnings and small changed-state chips.
layout
breakpoints

Mobile 375px single-column stacked cards; tablet 768px two-column shell with collapsible detail; desktop 1200px+ persistent three-zone workspace.

grid

8px baseline grid with 12 desktop columns; shell uses 220px navigation, fluid ledger, and 336px detail panel.

whitespace

Whitespace is narrow but deliberate: 16px within dense controls, 24px between work zones, 32px around page edges on desktop.

guidance
do
  • Use charcoal text on warm paper surfaces with WCAG-conscious contrast and a visible indigo focus ring.
  • Keep weave and stencil texture under the content layer, low contrast, and aligned to the grid.
  • Use compact typography for ledgers, annotations, comments, document lists, and planning workspaces.
  • Reserve pale indigo for current position, focus, selection, and info; reserve persimmon for small warning or changed indicators.
avoid
  • Do not use large ornamental Japanese motifs, red sun clichés, faux calligraphy, or decorative pattern panels.
  • Do not introduce saturated rainbow statuses, glossy gradients, rounded bubble cards, or heavy drop shadows.
  • Do not center large marketing headlines; this language is for working text, not landing pages.
  • Do not let pattern reduce legibility or appear behind small body copy at strong contrast.

# Light Katagami-Weave Workspace

## Philosophy

A clean, light, text-first workspace language that treats Japanese weaving structure and katagami stencil restraint as interface architecture: quiet repeat grids, paper-like surfaces, precise rulework, and semantic accents used only where attention must land.

### Values

- text before decoration
- craft discipline through repeat structure
- warm paper tactility
- calm information density
- semantic accent restraint

### Anti-Values

- ornamental pattern competing with reading
- generic white SaaS gloss
- oversaturated accent systems
- heavy shadows or glass effects

### Visual Character

- Use warm white paper backgrounds with two low-opacity repeating-linear-gradient weave layers at 0 and 90 degrees for a barely visible textile grid.
- Define content panels with one-pixel charcoal-tinted borders, square-to-small radii, and inset paper edge lines instead of soft floating shadows.
- Build layouts on a measured column grid with compact row rhythm, hairline separators, and left-aligned typographic hierarchy for dense reading.
- Apply pale indigo and muted persimmon only to focus rings, selected rows, active tabs, and small status chips while primary text remains charcoal.
- Use katagami-like stencil notches and tiny repeated dash marks as structural dividers, never as large decorative illustrations.

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edc2f-c02a-75f1-9cb9-baf5c52ec10a/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do Use charcoal text on warm paper surfaces with WCAG-conscious contrast and a visible indigo focus ring.
- Do Keep weave and stencil texture under the content layer, low contrast, and aligned to the grid.
- Do Use compact typography for ledgers, annotations, comments, document lists, and planning workspaces.
- Do Reserve pale indigo for current position, focus, selection, and info; reserve persimmon for small warning or changed indicators.
- Don't Do not use large ornamental Japanese motifs, red sun clichés, faux calligraphy, or decorative pattern panels.
- Don't Do not introduce saturated rainbow statuses, glossy gradients, rounded bubble cards, or heavy drop shadows.
- Don't Do not center large marketing headlines; this language is for working text, not landing pages.
- Don't Do not let pattern reduce legibility or appear behind small body copy at strong contrast.

### Accessibility

Maintain strong charcoal-on-paper contrast, keep all controls keyboard focusable with a 2px indigo outline, and pair color states with text labels, borders, or icons.

### Usage Context

Best for knowledge workspaces, editorial planning tools, archive review systems, research notebooks, task ledgers, and document operations products.

# Light Katagami-Weave Workspace shadcn/ui Components

Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019edc2f-c02a-75f1-9cb9-baf5c52ec10a`
Slug: `light-katagami-weave-workspace`

## Intent

A clean, light, text-first workspace language that treats Japanese weaving structure and katagami stencil restraint as interface architecture: quiet repeat grids, paper-like surfaces, precise rulework, and semantic accents used only where attention must land.

## Required primitives

- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve

## ShadSync visual profile

{
  "family": "paper-collage",
  "material": "paper",
  "contour": "default",
  "border": "dashed",
  "underlay": false,
  "grain": true,
  "stickerBadges": false,
  "motion": "still",
  "density": "dense",
  "accents": [
    "primary",
    "accent",
    "secondary",
    "muted"
  ]
}

## Signature component recipes

### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/light-katagami-weave-workspace/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use charcoal text on warm paper surfaces with WCAG-conscious contrast and a visible indigo focus ring.; Keep weave and stencil texture under the content layer, low contrast, and aligned to the grid.; Use compact typography for ledgers, annotations, comments, document lists, and planning workspaces.; Reserve pale indigo for current position, focus, selection, and info; reserve persimmon for small warning or changed indicators.
- Do not: Do not use large ornamental Japanese motifs, red sun clichés, faux calligraphy, or decorative pattern panels.; Do not introduce saturated rainbow statuses, glossy gradients, rounded bubble cards, or heavy drop shadows.; Do not center large marketing headlines; this language is for working text, not landing pages.; Do not let pattern reduce legibility or appear behind small body copy at strong contrast.

## Copy-paste component example
