rules
Start with the document or workspace object, then add context map and marginal signals around it. Avoid KPI mosaics as the opening structure. Use cards sparingly for summaries, sources, and decisions; let text blocks and annotations carry the experience.
Maintain reading comfort: body copy at 16-18px, line height 1.55-1.7, paragraphs max 72ch. Compact controls may use 13-14px UI text but never shrink the core reading layer.
Build hierarchy with type size, weight, spacing, and neutral contrast first. Indigo marks primary action, current context, focus, and relationship paths. Persimmon and moss are semantic pinpoints only.
layout
Mobile stacks context map, document, then signals; tablet uses document plus collapsible context; desktop supports the full three-zone reading workspace.
Default density is calm and readable; compact density may tighten lists and context chips while preserving line height for body text. Spacious density expands margins for review and synthesis sessions.
Document-first shell: narrow context map rail (220-260px), generous central reading/work surface, and optional marginal insight rail (260-320px) that never dominates the page. Use 12 columns only as an alignment substrate, not as a dashboard grid.
Metrics become inline chips or collapsible marginal notes on small screens. Relationship threads collapse to source-count badges and focusable anchors.
Large reading gutters, 24-40px section spacing, and quiet margins for annotations. Empty space is treated as working material, like unprinted washi, not as unused canvas.
guidance
- Use the neutral ramp and typography before adding accent color.
- Keep the central reading/work surface dominant and uncluttered.
- Use indigo for focus, links, selected context, and primary action consistently.
- Represent weaving through functional relationship lines, cadence, layering, and source adjacency.
- Use transparent overlays for hover, pressed, and selected states.
- Make analytics quiet, inline, marginal, or summary-like rather than dashboard-first.
- Do not use literal Japanese imagery, ornamental patterns, or faux heritage styling.
- Do not make katagami inspiration visible as decorative stencil motifs.
- Do not fill the interface with charts or KPI cards before the text workspace.
- Do not use persimmon or moss as large feature colors.
- Do not rely on low-contrast gray text to appear minimal.
- Do not use shadows or gradients as primary structure.

# Indigo Thread Design Tokens ## Philosophy A calm, light, text-first product design language for AYA workspaces that need to weave large amounts of context without becoming a dashboard. It translates Japanese craft principles into abstraction: washi-like restraint, katagami-like precision through repeated spacing and cuts, weaving as relationship lines and layered context, and indigo as the only broad accent family. The system is modern, minimal, product-grade, and deliberately avoids literal motifs, tourist symbolism, decorative stencil patterns, and ornament. Its identity comes from readable typography, generous negative space, disciplined token ramps, hairline thread connectors, transparent interaction overlays, and document-adjacent signals that keep the reading surface primary. ### Values - text-first calm with long-form reading surfaces as the dominant composition - craft through precision, proportion, rhythm, and material restraint rather than imagery - context woven through quiet lines, marginal markers, inline metadata, and layered summaries - systematic tokens for color, spacing, state overlays, and density modes - indigo used as intentional accent for focus, relationships, and primary action - neutral hierarchy from washi white to sumi ink before color is introduced - product-grade accessibility, keyboard focus, and repeatable primitives ### Anti-Values - literal Japanese motifs, waves, fans, cranes, lanterns, chop marks, faux calligraphy, or tourist cliches - decorative katagami stencil backgrounds or pattern-first identity - dashboard-first grids that make metrics louder than documents and decisions - heavy glassmorphism, strong shadows, saturated panels, or novelty typography - accent color assigned arbitrarily to many features ### Visual Character - Washi-white and pale neutral surfaces with very fine borders and nearly flat elevation. - Indigo thread lines connect related notes, sources, decisions, and compact analytics without creating decoration. - Margins carry small status dots, inline metrics, source counts, and freshness markers while the document remains central. - Spacing follows a measured cadence so repeated modules feel crafted, quiet, and intentional. - Persimmon and moss appear only as tiny semantic accents for warning and success, never as broad brand fields. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 2px - **Character**: warm neutral hairlines and slim indigo thread rules used for relationship, focus, and active context - **Default Width**: 1px - **Style**: solid ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | accent | `#D86F37` | | background | `#F8F7F2` | | border | `#DDD8CA` | | error | `#B54036` | | info | `#244C8F` | | ink_950 | `#1D1B18` | | muted | `#69645B` | | neutral_100 | `#F2F0E8` | | neutral_300 | `#C9C1B3` | | neutral_500 | `#827B70` | | neutral_700 | `#4E4942` | | primary | `#244C8F` | | primary_hover | `#1D3E77` | | primary_subtle | `#E8EEF8` | | secondary | `#5C7A4A` | | success | `#4F7A45` | | surface | `#FEFDF9` | | surface_subtle | `#F2F0E8` | | text | `#1D1B18` | | warning | `#C76A2A` | | washi_50 | `#FEFDF9` | ### Motion - **Duration**: 140ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0, 1) - **Philosophy**: Small confirmation only: overlay fade, focus ring sharpen, thread line reveal; no bounce or theatrical motion. ### Radii - **Full**: 9999px - **Lg**: 16px - **Md**: 10px - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 6px - **Xl**: 22px ### Shadows - **Lg**: 0 22px 48px rgba(29,27,24,0.08) - **Md**: 0 10px 24px rgba(29,27,24,0.06) - **Sm**: 0 1px 2px rgba(29,27,24,0.04) ### Spacing - **Base**: 4px - **Cadence**: 8px core rhythm with 12px and 20px intermediates for text-dense controls - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,20,24,32,40,48,64,80,96] ### States - **Focus Ring**: 2px #244C8F with 2px washi offset - **Hover Overlay**: rgba(36,76,143,0.06) - **Pressed Overlay**: rgba(36,76,143,0.10) - **Selected Overlay**: rgba(36,76,143,0.08) ### Surfaces - **Bg Pattern**: No decorative pattern; rhythm is expressed only through spacing, alignment, and functional thread lines. - **Card Style**: 16px radius warm-white panels with 1px neutral border and optional indigo relationship rail. - **Treatment**: Nearly flat washi-like neutrals, subtle tonal panels, transparent state overlays, and hairline separators. ### Typography - **Base Size**: 16px - **Body Font**: Source Serif 4 - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Inter:wght@400;500;600;700&family=Source+Serif+4:wght@400;500;600&family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500&display=swap - **Heading Font**: Inter - **Letter Spacing**: -0.01em - **Line Height**: 1.62 - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Scale Ratio**: 1.18 - **Ui Font**: Inter ## Rules ### Composition Start with the document or workspace object, then add context map and marginal signals around it. # Indigo Thread Design Tokens
## Overview
A calm, light, text-first product design language for AYA workspaces that need to weave large amounts of context without becoming a dashboard.
### Values
- text-first calm with long-form reading surfaces as the dominant composition
- craft through precision, proportion, rhythm, and material restraint rather than imagery
- context woven through quiet lines, marginal markers, inline metadata, and layered summaries
- systematic tokens for color, spacing, state overlays, and density modes
- indigo used as intentional accent for focus, relationships, and primary action
- neutral hierarchy from washi white to sumi ink before color is introduced
- product-grade accessibility, keyboard focus, and repeatable primitives
### Anti-Values
- literal Japanese motifs, waves, fans, cranes, lanterns, chop marks, faux calligraphy, or tourist cliches
- decorative katagami stencil backgrounds or pattern-first identity
- dashboard-first grids that make metrics louder than documents and decisions
- heavy glassmorphism, strong shadows, saturated panels, or novelty typography
- accent color assigned arbitrarily to many features
### Visual Character
- Washi-white and pale neutral surfaces with very fine borders and nearly flat elevation.

### Density
Default density is calm and readable; compact density may tighten lists and context chips while preserving line height for body text. Spacious density expands margins for review and synthesis sessions.
### Grid
Document-first shell: narrow context map rail (220-260px), generous central reading/work surface, and optional marginal insight rail (260-320px) that never dominates the page. Use 12 columns only as an alignment substrate, not as a dashboard grid.
### Responsive
Metrics become inline chips or collapsible marginal notes on small screens. Relationship threads collapse to source-count badges and focusable anchors.
### Whitespace
Large reading gutters, 24-40px section spacing, and quiet margins for annotations. Empty space is treated as working material, like unprinted washi, not as unused canvas.

## Components
### Composition
Start with the document or workspace object, then add context map and marginal signals around it. Avoid KPI mosaics as the opening structure. Use cards sparingly for summaries, sources, and decisions; let text blocks and annotations carry the experience.
### Density
Maintain reading comfort: body copy at 16-18px, line height 1.55-1.7, paragraphs max 72ch. Compact controls may use 13-14px UI text but never shrink the core reading layer.
### Hierarchy
Build hierarchy with type size, weight, spacing, and neutral contrast first. Indigo marks primary action, current context, focus, and relationship paths. Persimmon and moss are semantic pinpoints only.
### Signature Patterns
- Context threads: 1px indigo or neutral connector lines linking source chips, annotations, and related decisions.
- Marginal signals: compact document-adjacent indicators for status, freshness, confidence, and source count.
- Layered summaries: quiet nested panels with translucent indigo overlays for selected or expanded context.
- Cut-line focus: keyboard focus appears as a precise indigo outline with a warm washi offset, echoing craft precision without motif.
- Inline metrics: small mono numerals embedded near relevant text rather than isolated dashboard cards.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019edd3d-b508-75a1-876c-61847d14a857/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

# Indigo Thread Design Tokens shadcn/ui Components

Author: `katagami-ui-projection`

## Intent
A calm, light, text-first product design language for AYA workspaces that need to weave large amounts of context without becoming a dashboard.

## Visual character to preserve
- Washi-white and pale neutral surfaces with very fine borders and nearly flat elevation.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/indigo-thread-design-tokens/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use the neutral ramp and typography before adding accent color.; Keep the central reading/work surface dominant and uncluttered.; Use indigo for focus, links, selected context, and primary action consistently.; Represent weaving through functional relationship lines, cadence, layering, and source adjacency.; Use transparent overlays for hover, pressed, and selected states.; Make analytics quiet, inline, marginal, or summary-like rather than dashboard-first.
- Do not: Do not use literal Japanese imagery, ornamental patterns, or faux heritage styling.; Do not make katagami inspiration visible as decorative stencil motifs.; Do not fill the interface with charts or KPI cards before the text workspace.; Do not use persimmon or moss as large feature colors.; Do not rely on low-contrast gray text to appear minimal.; Do not use shadows or gradients as primary structure.
## Copy-paste component example
