rules
Compose screens as a manuscript ledger: outline gutter, narrative column, and evidence rail remain visually connected by shared horizontal rules and baseline spacing.
High-density editorial layouts are acceptable when line length, gutters, and marginal apparatus preserve continuous reading.
Use type size, weight, indentation, and rule thickness before color; cobalt indicates current path, plum indicates human authorship, green-gray indicates confidence.
layout
1200px keeps all three columns; 900px narrows the rail; 720px stacks outline and evidence as horizontal ledgers below the manuscript.
Desktop uses 176px outline gutter, minmax(520px, 760px) manuscript column, and 300px evidence rail inside a max-width ledger frame.
Whitespace is narrow but intentional: 24px baseline bands, 32px column gutters, generous paragraph leading, and empty margins around active annotations.
guidance
- Keep prose visible and central even when evidence is dense.
- Use cobalt, plum, and green-gray for their assigned meanings only.
- Prefer ruled bands, inline tables, citation strips, and marginal stacks over freestanding cards.
- Let Japanese manuscript grids and katagami repetition inform structure rather than ornament.
- Do not create multi-pane dashboard walls with resizable widgets.
- Do not use aggressive heatmaps, saturated status lights, or badge clutter.
- Do not hide annotations or source prose behind generic cards.
- Do not make every dataset a chart when a ruled table or micro tick is calmer.

# Quiet Ledger of Context
## Overview
A restrained Japanese-inspired editorial workspace where dense reading, annotations, evidence, and calm quantitative summaries share one ledger surface instead of becoming a dashboard.
### Values
- long-form legibility before decoration
- margins as active editorial apparatus
- data as quiet evidence attached to prose
- disciplined negative space and ruled rhythm
### Anti-Values
- dashboard chrome with competing panels
- aggressive heatmaps or traffic-light status color
- cards that hide prose and fragment reading
- decorative Japanese motifs without structural purpose
### Visual Character
- Use a three-column CSS grid with a narrow left outline gutter, a central manuscript column, and a right evidence rail that collapses beneath prose on small screens.
- Apply fine one-pixel ruled lines and manuscript-paper grid bands using repeating-linear-gradient backgrounds instead of heavy card shadows.
- Mark navigation and selected path with cobalt inset borders and slim rule accents while reserving plum only for authored comments and marginal notes.
- Set dense text in high x-height serif paragraphs with compact sans metadata, tabular figures, and footnote-scale labels aligned to the ledger baseline.
- Represent completeness and confidence as green-gray hairline ticks, micro bars, and quiet summary bands adjacent to passages rather than separate charts.
## Colors
Use the YAML color tokens as the normative palette. The prose below names the roles agents should preserve when generating UI.
| Token | Value |
|-------|-------|
| accent | `#718571` |
| background | `#FAF9F5` |
| border | `#D8D2C6` |

| muted | `#777168` |
| primary | `#2E5E9E` |
| secondary | `#8A5A73` |
| success | `#718571` |
| surface | `#F0EEE7` |
| text | `#25231F` |
| warning | `#A47A42` |

## Components
### Composition
Compose screens as a manuscript ledger: outline gutter, narrative column, and evidence rail remain visually connected by shared horizontal rules and baseline spacing.
### Density
High-density editorial layouts are acceptable when line length, gutters, and marginal apparatus preserve continuous reading.
### Hierarchy
Use type size, weight, indentation, and rule thickness before color; cobalt indicates current path, plum indicates human authorship, green-gray indicates confidence.
### Signature Patterns
- Manuscript grid underlay built from two repeating-linear-gradients at the baseline rhythm, visible only in broad bands and gutters.
- Citation strips appear as inline hairline rows with source codes, anchors, and tiny confidence bars rather than raised cards.
- Evidence rail entries align to paragraph anchors with vertical thread rules that visually weave marginal notes back into the text.
- Section transitions use ruled summary bands containing tabular figures and small multiples in footnote scale, not dashboard tiles.
- Selected outline items use a cobalt left inset rule and pale band fill while authored comments use plum brackets and stacked note folds.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ee037-367e-7f71-8e38-5b449f07fa19/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Keep prose visible and central even when evidence is dense.
- Do Use cobalt, plum, and green-gray for their assigned meanings only.
- Do Prefer ruled bands, inline tables, citation strips, and marginal stacks over freestanding cards.
- Do Let Japanese manuscript grids and katagami repetition inform structure rather than ornament.
- Don't Do not create multi-pane dashboard walls with resizable widgets.
- Don't Do not use aggressive heatmaps, saturated status lights, or badge clutter.
- Don't Do not hide annotations or source prose behind generic cards.
- Don't Do not make every dataset a chart when a ruled table or micro tick is calmer.

## Intent
A restrained Japanese-inspired editorial workspace where dense reading, annotations, evidence, and calm quantitative summaries share one ledger surface instead of becoming a dashboard.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/quiet-ledger-of-context/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Keep prose visible and central even when evidence is dense.; Use cobalt, plum, and green-gray for their assigned meanings only.; Prefer ruled bands, inline tables, citation strips, and marginal stacks over freestanding cards.; Let Japanese manuscript grids and katagami repetition inform structure rather than ornament.
- Do not: Do not create multi-pane dashboard walls with resizable widgets.; Do not use aggressive heatmaps, saturated status lights, or badge clutter.; Do not hide annotations or source prose behind generic cards.; Do not make every dataset a chart when a ruled table or micro tick is calmer.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
```tsx
import { Badge } from "@/components/ui/badge";
