rules
Use a three-layer editorial composition: dense reading material on the left, a narrow context rail in the middle, and a sliding inspector paper sheet on the right only when decisions or metadata need focus.
High information density is allowed when rows, citations, and claims align to the 4/8px grid and section rhythm opens every 24 or 32px.
Hierarchy comes from type scale, line length, indentation, hairline separators, small tabs, and reserved whitespace; accents mark state with strokes and dots rather than colored containers.
layout
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px, wide 1440px
Desktop uses 12-column reading grid with fixed 56px stencil rail and 320px inspector; tablet stacks inspector below rail; mobile turns rail into top index tabs.
Whitespace is ma-like and rhythmic: 24px between sections, 32px for major shifts, and narrow 8px gutters inside rail modules.
guidance
- Keep accents as 1px strokes, small tabs, outline glyphs, dots, and low-opacity tints.
- Use real editorial content with citations, claims, marginalia, and calm decision summaries.
- Let negative space and hairlines create hierarchy before adding color or shadow.
- Keep long-form text readable with serif typography and generous line-height.
- Do not use boxed dashboard widgets, thick blue filled selections, or generic sidebar chrome.
- Do not turn Japanese motifs into decorative wallpaper, waves, fans, or ornamental backgrounds.
- Do not overload the interface with pills, bubbly radii, saturated fills, or heavy drop shadows.
- Do not use monospace for body text except citations and structured data.

# Katagami Stencil Rail System ## Philosophy A calm Japanese editorial workspace where a precise stencil rail overlays dense source material, using negative space, hairline cut marks, and paper-like layers to organize context without dashboard chrome. ### Values - negative-space organization - long-form reading clarity - annotation as structure - desaturated categorical meaning - quiet archive precision ### Anti-Values - boxed analytics dashboards - thick colorful selection fills - decorative Japanese wallpaper motifs - generic SaaS navigation chrome ### Visual Character - Three CSS grid columns create a reading plane, 56px stencil rail, and optional 320px inspector sheet with responsive collapse. - One-pixel borders and pseudo-element cut marks form tabs, anchors, separators, and active rail indicators instead of filled controls. - Porcelain and cool-blue surfaces stay nearly flat, with 4 to 8 percent tinted categorical strips rather than saturated background fills. - Long-form serif text receives generous line-height while compact sans labels use uppercase tracking and small numeric rail counters. - Annotation anchors appear as outline glyphs, small tabs, and active dots positioned in the margin rather than pill-heavy badges. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 1px - **Character**: stencil-like outlines, not heavy strokes or filled selections - **Default Width**: 1px - **Style**: solid hairline with cut-corner pseudo elements ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | accent | `#B48A43` | | background | `#FCFCFA` | | border | `#D7E0E1` | | error | `#8C4A3F` | | info | `#1E557A` | | muted | `#667174` | | primary | `#1E557A` | | secondary | `#7D9162` | | success | `#6F7F55` | | surface | `#F2F6F7` | | text | `#1F2324` | | warning | `#B48A43` | ### Motion - **Duration**: 180ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0.1, 1) - **Philosophy**: quiet sheet slides and rail reveals; # Katagami Stencil Rail System
## Overview
A calm Japanese editorial workspace where a precise stencil rail overlays dense source material, using negative space, hairline cut marks, and paper-like layers to organize context without dashboard chrome.
### Values
- negative-space organization
- long-form reading clarity
- annotation as structure
- desaturated categorical meaning
- quiet archive precision
### Anti-Values
- boxed analytics dashboards
- thick colorful selection fills
- decorative Japanese wallpaper motifs
- generic SaaS navigation chrome
### Visual Character
- Three CSS grid columns create a reading plane, 56px stencil rail, and optional 320px inspector sheet with responsive collapse.
- One-pixel borders and pseudo-element cut marks form tabs, anchors, separators, and active rail indicators instead of filled controls.
- Porcelain and cool-blue surfaces stay nearly flat, with 4 to 8 percent tinted categorical strips rather than saturated background fills.
- Long-form serif text receives generous line-height while compact sans labels use uppercase tracking and small numeric rail counters.
- Annotation anchors appear as outline glyphs, small tabs, and active dots positioned in the margin rather than pill-heavy badges.

## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ee037-40c7-76f0-8325-d0054fe8dd42/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Keep accents as 1px strokes, small tabs, outline glyphs, dots, and low-opacity tints.
- Do Use real editorial content with citations, claims, marginalia, and calm decision summaries.
- Do Let negative space and hairlines create hierarchy before adding color or shadow.
- Do Keep long-form text readable with serif typography and generous line-height.
- Don't Do not use boxed dashboard widgets, thick blue filled selections, or generic sidebar chrome.
- Don't Do not turn Japanese motifs into decorative wallpaper, waves, fans, or ornamental backgrounds.
- Don't Do not overload the interface with pills, bubbly radii, saturated fills, or heavy drop shadows.
- Don't Do not use monospace for body text except citations and structured data.

## Intent
A calm Japanese editorial workspace where a precise stencil rail overlays dense source material, using negative space, hairline cut marks, and paper-like layers to organize context without dashboard chrome.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
- Three CSS grid columns create a reading plane, 56px stencil rail, and optional 320px inspector sheet with responsive collapse.
- One-pixel borders and pseudo-element cut marks form tabs, anchors, separators, and active rail indicators instead of filled controls.
- Porcelain and cool-blue surfaces stay nearly flat, with 4 to 8 percent tinted categorical strips rather than saturated background fills.
- Long-form serif text receives generous line-height while compact sans labels use uppercase tracking and small numeric rail counters.
- Annotation anchors appear as outline glyphs, small tabs, and active dots positioned in the margin rather than pill-heavy badges.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/katagami-stencil-rail-system/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Keep accents as 1px strokes, small tabs, outline glyphs, dots, and low-opacity tints.; Use real editorial content with citations, claims, marginalia, and calm decision summaries.; Let negative space and hairlines create hierarchy before adding color or shadow.; Keep long-form text readable with serif typography and generous line-height.
- Do not: Do not use boxed dashboard widgets, thick blue filled selections, or generic sidebar chrome.; Do not turn Japanese motifs into decorative wallpaper, waves, fans, or ornamental backgrounds.; Do not overload the interface with pills, bubbly radii, saturated fills, or heavy drop shadows.; Do not use monospace for body text except citations and structured data.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
