Start with sumi black text and spacing before adding color. Headings are compact and weighty, body text is highly readable, and metadata uses mono only in small doses. grid
Desktop uses a 12-column shell with a 220px navigation rail, 7-column document workspace, and 300px context/analytics rail; gutters are 20-24px and internals snap to a 4px baseline grid.

On small screens, ledger rows become stacked label/value pairs, marginal signals become section headers, and primary actions remain visible at the document edge.
whitespace

Negative space is measured and functional: generous around reading blocks, tighter in ledgers, and never filled with decorative texture.

guidance
do
  • Use crisp white and warm-gray surfaces as the main identity, with sumi black text doing most of the work.
  • Align labels, values, deltas, citations, and timestamps to a ledger rhythm across prose and compact panels.
  • Reserve deep indigo for active navigation, focus, selected context, links, and primary action states.
  • Reserve persimmon for deltas, anomalies, overdue review, and exception markers only.
  • Pair every semantic color with text, shape, or placement so state remains legible without color.
  • Style inputs, selects, checkboxes, buttons, menus, tabs, hover, active, disabled, loading, and focus states deliberately.
  • Translate katagami and washi into restraint, cut-space, layering, and cadence rather than patterns.
avoid
  • Do not use literal Japanese motifs, paper grain backgrounds, brush lettering, waves, blossoms, seals, fans, or decorative indigo patterns.
  • Do not turn the workspace into a chart dashboard; analytics should be document-adjacent and compact.
  • Do not use persimmon as a brand accent or general secondary color.
  • Do not rely on shadows, gradients, or rounded-card sameness for hierarchy.
  • Do not hide interaction states in browser defaults or low-contrast gray outlines.
  • Do not scatter metrics with inconsistent alignment or number formatting.

# Sumi Ledger Product System

## Philosophy

A calm, precise, text-first product design language for AYA Katagami workspaces that need to weave large amounts of context into readable decisions. It translates Japanese craft principles—katagami stencil discipline, washi restraint, sumi ink contrast, indigo utility, and persimmon warning—into interface behavior rather than ornament. The system feels like a modern ledger beside a living document: quiet white and warm-gray surfaces, decisive black text, compact inline metrics, aligned marginal signals, and robust interaction states that make dense enterprise work feel composed instead of heavy.

### Values

- text remains the primary interface material; metrics support prose instead of replacing it
- ledger alignment gives paragraphs, summaries, tables, and marginal signals a shared reading rhythm
- Japanese craft influence appears as restraint, layering, cadence, and negative space, never as literal motifs
- semantic state is tokenized, desaturated, and paired with labels or shape so color is never the only cue
- interaction states are product-grade: visible focus, clear selection, calm loading, and reversible editing
- compact density supports synthesis work without becoming dashboard clutter

### Anti-Values

- tourist-Japan decoration, wave patterns, lanterns, fans, cherry blossoms, faux calligraphy, or paper textures as wallpaper
- marketing gradients, glassmorphism, dramatic shadows, and oversized illustration panels
- chart-first dashboards that interrupt reading flow or turn every number into a widget
- pale gray text below accessible contrast in the name of minimalism
- unstructured cards floating without shared baselines or tabular alignment
- saturated semantic colors used as large fills instead of precise status notation

### Visual Character

- Near-white document planes sit on soft warm-gray page gutters with hairline ash borders and minimal elevation.
- Sumi black headings and body text create crisp readability; slate and ash support hierarchy without fading below WCAG AA.
- Deep indigo marks active navigation, selected anchors, focus outlines, and primary actions with narrow rails or rings.
- Persimmon is reserved for deltas, anomalies, overdue signals, and review exceptions, usually as a tiny marker paired with text.
- Inline metrics appear as mono-aligned capsules, right-tabbed numbers, and marginal annotations embedded in prose.

# Sumi Ledger Product System

## Overview

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/sumi-ledger-product-system/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

# Sumi Ledger Product System shadcn/ui Components

Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `sumi-ledger-product-system`
Slug: `sumi-ledger-product-system`

## Intent

A calm, precise, text-first product design language for AYA Katagami workspaces that need to weave large amounts of context into readable decisions. It translates Japanese craft principles—katagami stencil discipline, washi restraint, sumi ink contrast, indigo utility, and persimmon warning—into interface behavior rather than ornament. The system feels like a modern ledger beside a living document: quiet white and warm-gray surfaces, decisive black text, compact inline metrics, aligned marginal signals, and robust interaction states that make dense enterprise work feel composed instead of heavy.

## Visual character to preserve

- Near-white document planes sit on soft warm-gray page gutters with hairline ash borders and minimal elevation.
- Sumi black headings and body text create crisp readability; slate and ash support hierarchy without fading below WCAG AA.
- Deep indigo marks active navigation, selected anchors, focus outlines, and primary actions with narrow rails or rings.
- Persimmon is reserved for deltas, anomalies, overdue signals, and review exceptions, usually as a tiny marker paired with text.
- Inline metrics appear as mono-aligned capsules, right-tabbed numbers, and marginal annotations embedded in prose.

Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/sumi-ledger-product-system/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use crisp white and warm-gray surfaces as the main identity, with sumi black text doing most of the work.; Align labels, values, deltas, citations, and timestamps to a ledger rhythm across prose and compact panels.; Reserve deep indigo for active navigation, focus, selected context, links, and primary action states.; Reserve persimmon for deltas, anomalies, overdue review, and exception markers only.; Pair every semantic color with text, shape, or placement so state remains legible without color.; Style inputs, selects, checkboxes, buttons, menus, tabs, hover, active, disabled, loading, and focus states deliberately.; Translate katagami and washi into restraint, cut-space, layering, and cadence rather than patterns.
- Do not: Do not use literal Japanese motifs, paper grain backgrounds, brush lettering, waves, blossoms, seals, fans, or decorative indigo patterns.; Do not turn the workspace into a chart dashboard; analytics should be document-adjacent and compact.; Do not use persimmon as a brand accent or general secondary color.; Do not rely on shadows, gradients, or rounded-card sameness for hierarchy.; Do not hide interaction states in browser defaults or low-contrast gray outlines.; Do not scatter metrics with inconsistent alignment or number formatting.

## Copy-paste component example

This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
